Fire Tape

Fire taping is a code requirement on new construction and remodels, not an optional finish step. It's the first coat of tape and mud applied over drywall seams and fasteners in fire-rated assemblies — garages, shared walls between units, and other areas where the building code requires a fire-rated barrier. Inspectors check for it before the wall can be closed up any further, so it has to be done right the first time.

Why fire taping matters

A fire-rated wall assembly only works as designed if every seam and screw head is properly taped and coated — gaps or thin spots undermine the fire rating the assembly is supposed to provide. This is especially common in garages (which share a fire-rated wall with the living space) and in ADUs or multi-unit construction, where code requires a fire-rated separation between units.
